This paper looks at the Chinese narratives on the Arab national independence movements. It takes a cultural studies approach to understand the formation of the Chinese discourse of third-world internationalism and Chinese understanding of an ideal modern world order. This paper also hopes to demonstrate how the “anti-imperialist and national independence movements in the Arab world” enters into the Chinese revolutionary context and becomes a common knowledge among the Chinese people. This process, as this paper argues, constitutes as a key component in the political practice of “transforming people’s worldview” in Chinese revolutionary history. As a knowledge, “anti-imperialist and national independence movements in the Arab world” also helps to constitute the subjectivity of “Chinese people”, mobilize the mass for political engagement, and construct the internationalist recognition of the “grand union of all peoples around the world”. The support of the Arab people helps the Chinese people to articulate the thesis that the Chinese “national independence” is a component of a grand internationalist movement of human liberation.
