Experiment Code: COLSEQ_FY_IPLM_006 Introduction & Research Question: As in the previous COLSEQ experiments, we wanted to put colour learning and sequence learning in competition to see what sort of cue competition effects we would observe. This coupled together the "Rossy" way of creating the Dual group and my way of producing the Dual group. Rossy put the colours on every third trial so competition for learning would occur, whereas I put the colours correlated with the sequence. Thus we ran a colour and sequence group as before but two Dual groups - one following Rossy's technique (Dual Uncorrelated) and one following mine (Dual Correlated). Participants: 64 Experiment Software: MatLab Method: Participants responded with two spatially compatible key presses (x and >) to left and right circle flashes on screen, which lit up 250-500msecs after a central cue: a square that remained on screen until the response. The colour of the square was one of four (red, green, blue, yellow) and these were equally likely to occur. The circles would also fill up with the same colour as the square on each trial. In the three between subject groups the current response was either: predicted by the colour in the Colour group (2/3 predictive for two colours); the previous two trials in the Sequence group (2/3 predictive by XOR rule); or both in the Dual group. This training lasted for 18 blocks of 120 trials, with 2 blocks of 120 trials following acting as test with neither colour nor sequence predicting L or R responses to allow for comparison. This was followed by a prediction task where participants were required to generate a response to the colours with no response stimuli for 2 blocks of 16 trials with each colour appearing four times each. Participants also responded to a structured interview.
