Analizzo in questo articolo Prima della tempesta di Theodor Fontane, il ciclo iniziale degli Episodi nazionali di Benito Pérez Galdós, Guerra e pace di Leone Tolstoj e Le confessioni di un italiano di Ippolito Nievo – pubblicati fra il 1865 e il 1878, in momenti cruciali nella storia dei paesi dei quattro autori – per mostrare quel che ...
Analizzo in questo articolo Prima della tempesta di Theodor Fontane, il ciclo iniziale degli Episodi nazionali di Benito Pérez Galdós, Guerra e pace di Leone Tolstoj e Le confessioni di un italiano di Ippolito Nievo – pubblicati fra il 1865 e il 1878, in momenti cruciali nella storia dei paesi dei quattro autori – per mostrare quel che questi romanzi hanno in comune e quel che li distingue fra di loro. Ogni testo descrive una società nazionale (o regionale) fra ’700 e ’800, illustra come fu messa alla prova dall’invasione napoleonica e dai principi liberali e democratici che gli invasori portarono con sé, mostra come quella società reagì e si sviluppò in seguito alla prova, e riassume lo spirito e le sfide di quel periodo storico in alcuni episodi emblematici. La maggior attenzione è rivolta a Nievo, che si distingue dagli altri scrittori considerati perché crede che i cambiamenti del carattere nazionale possano avere un passo talmente spedito da essere testimoniati da un singolo nel corso di una pur lunga esistenza; perché descrive uno di questi cambiamenti; e perché la forza intima che aiuta i suoi connazionali a reagire all’invasione straniera non è per lui radicata nelle strutture sociali o psichiche della nazione, ma è un principio o una pratica politica efficace in tutti i paesi.
