The DESCRIBE project was funded by Jisc to look at how we provide definitions and capture the evidence of research impact and provide the recommendations for universities, research funders and those who enable research.

In the UK, EU and internationally research funders who are responsible for distributing governmental resources to universities and research institutes need to demonstrate to the government and tax payers the benefits arising from their investment in order to maintain funding.

In the UK, the need to justify research funding has led to the contentious requirement for universities to provide evidence of the impact of their research through the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014, which has put impact under the spotlight.

The objective of the DESCRIBE project was to answer questions around impact and recommend consistent approaches to evaluating impact across different research disciplines.
