À l’ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs paraît en juin 1919, entre deux textes marquants de Paul Valéry : son célèbre essai esthético-politique « La crise de l’esprit », publié d’abord à Londres en avril-mai 1919, et le poème-monument « Le cimetière marin », publié en juin 1920. Dans son essai (paru en français dans La NRf en août 1919), Valéry décrit les artistes en temps de crise cherchant « des consolations dans le registre entier des souvenirs, des actes antérieurs, des attitudes ancestrales. » Est-ce cela ce que représentent les Jeunes filles ? Cette contribution considérera, d’un côté, l’esthétique du roman proustien à l’aune de la vision de l’Europe morne et sévère qui émerge de « La crise de l’esprit » et, de l’autre côté, en comparaison avec les réflexions sur la mort, la mutabilité et la mer offertes aux lecteurs du « Cimetière marin ». À travers ces lectures croisées nous essayerons de naviguer dans les eaux troubles entre Balbec et Sète.
