This dataset, and associated code for R Statistical Software, was used to examine the potential of Google Trends for monitoring public engagement with nature. We used the following process: 1. We created a broad initial list of possible search terms relating to different outdoor spaces and activities. 2. We used Google Trends to refine search terms to ensure that they identified relevant Google searches. 3. We extracted data from Google Trends for the final set of search terms across both a 1-year and 10-year period. 4. We assessed correlations between trends for the different search terms to identify shared patterns in their usage. 5. We compared trends to those from Google Community Mobility Reports, the People and Nature Survey (PANS), and the Monitor of Engagement with the Natural Environment (MENE).en_GB
