Since there is little analytical foundation for assigning damping values in dynamic response analyses of long-span suspension bridges, the process usually reduces to using values derived from published physical test data. Such sources of damping data and the accuracy of measurement methods are examined. Methods of energy dissipation in components of the structure are evaluated to help explain the observations and to provide a basis for rational prediction of values.en_GB
