Calstock Roman Fort: Understanding Landscapes Teacher Resource Pack

Abstract

Calstock Roman Fort, located on the River Tamar, lay undiscovered until 2007 when an archaeological survey around the parish church revealed a square Roman fort. Archaeological excavations since then have uncovered the story of this fort, revealing it was home to 500 Roman soldiers for over 30 years. This discovery has rewritten the history of Calstock parish and enhanced our understanding of the expansion of the Roman empire into Cornwall. This archaeology themed teacher resource pack takes pupils through the archaeological process that has revealed the history of Calstock Roman fort. It is designed for Key Stage 2 pupils and is aligned with the History curriculum while also making links to other curriculum areas. The resource pack was created as part of the University of Exeter’s Understanding Landscapes project. The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and supported by the public and a network of project partners from the heritage sector.
