The paper presents archaeometric analyses of pottery vessels from the early mediaeval,
8th–9th century cemeteries of Frohsdorf, Pitten and Erlach (Lower Austria).
According to the metal finds, as well as to the macroscopic characteristics
of the pottery, the cemetery of Frohsdorf belongs to the ‘Avar’ milieu. From
Pitten and Erlach come divergent finds which are usually connected with the
‘Slavs’. Using petrographic thin-section analysis the pottery vessels were investigated
as to whether or how far both population groups were connected by
common technological traditions of pottery production.
