This paper investigates the presence of Northern European seamen and merchants in Marseille during the first half of the seventeenth century through the analysis of their dealings with the local justice system. It focuses on the administration of justice, both informal (through notarised private arbitrations) and formal (through local courts cases), contributing to current debates on the role of state institutions in the management of international trade during the early modern period. Through the analysis of the most common litigations encountered by English and Dutch crews, it throws new light on the interaction of Northern shipping with the economy of Marseille, and pinpoints differences in the legal frameworks regulating maritime trade across Europe.
