This article investigates the plausibility of Polyainos’ information about a slave revolt in Syracuse in 414 BCE by reconsidering the social structure of the polis in its historical evolution. In particular, a thorough analysis of the sources about the Kyllyrioi allows a revision of the current theories on their collective liberation, and to recognize to Polyainos’ passage, until now generally considered simply false, a bigger trustworthiness.
