Thucydides and the historiography of trauma

Abstract

L’historiographie du traumatisme, un thème de recherche important dans les dernières années, suggère une approche de l’interprétation du récit de Thucydide de la défaite d'Athènes. Cet article explore comment Pierre Vidal-Naquet s’est appuyé sur Thucydide dans ses discussions sur la représentation historique de l’Holocauste, et jusqu’à quel point nous pourrions voir son travail comme un modèle pour les récits modernes de l’atrocité. Elle considère ensuite la possibilité que le récit de Thucydide soit lui-même le produit d’un traumatisme, et les implications pour notre interprétation de celui-ci si elle est considérée comme un «acting out» ou un «working through» de ses propres expériences passées.

The historiography of trauma, an important research theme in recent years, suggests an approach to the interpretation of Thucydides’ account of the defeat of Athens. This paper explores how Pierre Vidal-Naquet drew on Thucydides in his discussions of the historical representation of the Holocaust, and how far we might see his work as a model for modern accounts of atrocity. It then considers the possibility that Thucydides’ narrative was itself the product of trauma, and the implications for our interpretation of it if it is seen as an acting out or a working through of his own past experiences.
