Late Antiquity was a pivotal period that saw formative changes for two of the three Monotheistic religions and the birth of the third. This chapter explores how these processes impacted on Art and Architecture and how far pre-existing artistic currents were adopted in the formulation of new modes of iconographic expression. It also seeks to highlight the pivotal influence of existing modes of worship on these ‘new’ religions and explore the transmutation of earlier iconographical forms into acceptable Christian and Islamic tropes.en_GB
