This note considers the recent judgment in Waggott v Waggott [2018] EWCA Civ 727. Widely reported using the term ‘a meal ticket for life’ (see, for example, Gouriet (2018) and Sawer (2018)), the case is significant for its consideration of the scope of the principles of compensation and sharing first introduced in Miller v Miller; McFarlane v McFarlane [2006] UKHL 24. It highlights the issue of reaching a fair outcome where the parties played different roles in their relationship, which have had very different impacts on their ability to support themselves into the future.
